The Leaves

The Leaves were an American garage rock band that was founded in 1963 in the U.S. state of California. The band has become known for her hit song Hey Joe in 1966. Moreover, their version of the song was the first published version, so is the original and was subsequently a rock standard.

History

The band was formed in 1963 by bassist Jim Pons. Pons was greatly inspired by the Beatles when he was studying at Cal State University Northbridge. Initially named the band The Rockwells. The band members have their musical self-taught. In addition to Jim Pons, the band still consisted of John Beck, bassist and lead singer, Bobby Arlin, Tom Ray (drums) and Robert Lee Rainer ( guitar).

The band began to play surf and dance music at parties. The first appearance was in the school gymnasium with "Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band ". In 1966, after the first hit of the band The Byrds gave the same to their place in the Ciro's nightclub program and were replaced by The Leaves. In this nightclub they were discovered by the singer and actor Pat Boone, who helped the band to a recording contract.

Their first single, " Too Many People" (1966 ) did not make it beyond the boundaries of Los Angeles. However, the gecoverte song Hey Joe space reached 40 on the U.S. charts in the same year. The eponymous album was released a short time later.

The band appeared in many American TV shows, including American Bandstand, Shivaree, Shebang and even played a role in the film The Cool Ones (1967). Another album called All The Good That's Happening in 1967, shortly before the band had dissolved published. The bass player Jim Pons then moved to the pop group The Turtles.

A new generation of music fans discovered the band until 1972, when their version of Hey Joe was inducted into the classic garage rock compilation Nuggets.
