The Turtles

The Turtles were an American rock band of the 1960s, who had their biggest hit with the single Happy Together.

Band History

1963 Howard Kaylan played, Al Nichol, Chuck Portz and Don Murray in the surf band The Night Riders from Los Angeles. After they had joined Mark Volman, they called themselves The Cross Fires and brought the singles Fiberglass Jungle and One Potato, Two Potato on the market. The latter was after all a Lokalhit. Later they were joined by Jim Tucker.

1965 heard the disc jockey Reb Foster and she was so excited that he became their manager and they procured a contract with White Whale Records. The Cross Fires changed their name first in The Tyrtles ( as a counterpart of the Byrds ), but called themselves soon after The Turtles. To the names they were allegedly inspired by the game of love of turtles ( turtle = turtle), which can take up to 24 hours, which the group members probably very impressed. First, the Turtles who covered songs exclusively well-known composers, such as Bob Dylan and PF Sloan. The gameplay reminded very much of the the Byrds.

By Dylan Cover It Is not Me Babe they came in 1965 for the first time in the Top 10 on the album of the same name were two other Dylan cover included.

This was followed by the hits Let Me Be, You Baby, and finally Happy Together, her biggest success. In addition, the albums You Baby ( 1966) and Happy Together (1967 ) were published.

That same year, Murray and Portz left the band. As a replacement came John barbata and Chip Douglas. In the following phase the singles She'd Rather Be With Me, You Know What I Mean and She's My Girl appeared. A short time later also Douglas left the Turtles. He was replaced by Jim Pons. Also, Tucker returned the band soon after the back.

The songs on the album The Turtles Present the '68 Battle of the Bands ( in Germany as Elenore published) sounded so different than they had been taken from different bands. As more singles were released Elenore and You Showed Me

1969 appeared the album Turtle Soup, which had produced Ray Davies of the Kinks. With Wooden Head, appeared in 1970, the last album of the Turtles, who soon parted it. Volman and Kaylan played from 1970 in Frank Zappa's band The Mothers of Invention and brought there and Turtle - pieces for performance. First, under the name The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie, and because they could no longer use the name of Turtles, Flo & Eddie as then.

In 1992 there were in New York City to a reunion of the Turtles for a live recording. However, Kaylan and Volman were only left.
