The Mighty Celt is an Irish film drama from the year 2005. Directed and wrote the screenplay Pearse Elliott.

Action

The boy Donal lives with his single mother Kate. He works in his spare time for the owner of racing greyhounds Good Joe. Donal rescues a dog to be killed and trains him for the race. Meanwhile, Kate reconciled with her former friend O, a terrorist who temporarily lived in exile.

Reviews

Neil Smith wrote on 22 August 2005 for the BBC, Anderson brings to the film a shot of Hollywood glamor. The story is thin and rather hard, the movie bein consider images of animal cruelty. McKenna's presentation was promising.

The magazine The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the film was well-intentioned, but he tells a predictable story.

Awards

Gillian Anderson was awarded in 2005 at the Irish Film and Television Awards Audience Award. The film for Best Picture, Pearse Elliott as a screenwriter and Seamus Deasy were nominated for the Irish Film and Television Award.

Background

The film was shot in Belfast and Larne ( Northern Ireland). His cost of production was estimated at 2.8 million euros. The world premiere took place on 11 February 2005 on the Dublin film festival. On 15 February 2005, the film was shown at the International Film Festival in Berlin, the numerous other film festivals followed. On 26 August 2005 he joined the British cinema.
