The Notting Hillbillies

The British Country band The Notting Hillbillies was founded in the late 1980s by Mark Knopfler, the frontman of Dire Straits and Steve Phillips. Knopfler and Phillips knew each other since the days of their studies. Other band members were keyboardist of Dire Straits, Guy Fletcher, Brendan Croker and who had previously worked with Phillips.

The formation met in 1990 in the private, located in London's Notting Hill recording studio Knopfler and produced the album Missing ... Presumed Having A Good Time. Drums played in the recordings Dire Straits manager Ed Bicknell. It mostly folk songs and old songs have been recorded. The album was released in 1990 and reached an average hit parade placement. The Notting Hillbillies took a brief tour and then went their separate ways. Since two of the four band members came from the Dire Straits were the Notting Hillbillies as " offshoot " of the Dire Straits and as " the new project by Mark Knopfler " marketed, but this did not correspond exactly to reality; the album contained only one song that was written by Knopfler.

Between 1996 and 1998, were the Notting Hillbillies a few more times together in Britain.

In 2002, Mark Knopfler four benefit concerts in London, where he played himself in the first part with Notting Hillbillies reunified and in the second part with some musicians from the Dire Straits.
