The Rivieras

The Rivieras was an American surf rock band that became famous in the 1960s, in particular, by the title of California Sun.

History

The band was at the beginning of the 1960s in South Bend (Indiana), USA founded and initially joined under the name The Playmates on. Early 1964, she published under the name of the song California Sun The Rivieras, the Henry Glover and Morris Levy had originally written in 1961 for a singer named Joe Jones. The single reached number 5 on the U.S. charts and is considered the last great U.S. success before the British Invasion took over the direction of the U.S. charts. In Germany, the song placed at No. 15 of the singles charts. After the hit of the band, the singer, the Rivieras, and the current manager, Bill Dobslaw left took over the vocals. It was followed by several minor successes before the band split in 1966.

Other cover versions of California Sun appeared, among others, 1966 by Hal Blaine, 1967 by Tommy James & the Shondells and 1968 by Ola & the Janglers. German -language versions were released in 1964 by Benny Quick and 1971 under the title California Night by Mary Roos. Another version of the single hits California Sun appeared in 1977 on the B - side of one of the first singles of the U.S. punk band the Ramones, as well as on their 1977 album erschienenem Leave Home. The rock band The Dictators released the song on her 1975 feature debut album, The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!. In 1987, the version of the Riviera for the soundtrack to the film Good Morning, Vietnam was used.
