The Sea and Cake
The Sea and Cake is influenced by jazz post-rock band from Chicago, Illinois, founded by singer and guitarist Sam Prekop and bassist Eric Claridge together with guitarist Archer Prewitt and drummer John McEntire in 1993, which her a reputation post-rock supergroup earned. The band named themselves after the misunderstood Gastr Del Sol song entitled "The C in Cake".
Career
The musicians involved were actively involved before and after the band's formation in the Chicago post-rock scene. The first record the influences of the previous bands the members were more or less clearly audible ( and Others Gastr Del Sol, The coctails, Shrimp Boat and Tortoise ). Your own interpretation of the sound relates mainly elements of Jazz, R'n'B, Krautrock and a Easy Listening, processed but also catchy pop structures and electronic sounds. Since the 2000 album " Oui ," the band processed also reinforces Latin and African influences. Trademark of the band as was the relaxed, elegant and rhythmically precise sound. Also unusual is the method that Prekop at the very supplement singing at the end of the recordings, which causes the other band members, this element only hear when mixing of each album for the first time.
Between 2004 and 2007, put The Sea and Cake a break. Even in the time between the other albums the musicians operated on solo albums or collaborated with fellow artists. With the exception of the 2007 album " Everybody" all releases of the band of McEntire were produced, all of their albums published by Thrill Jockey. The artistic design of the albums often consists of paintings of Claridge and photographs by McEntire.
The band comes mainly from critics with a positive response. So the debut album "The Sea and Cake " took place in 1994 four of the critics and 6th place the reader Charts of Spex.
