As on the last day even void the kerosene lamp, only darkness remains.

Background

The film's title refers to an anecdote, according to Friedrich Nietzsche is said to have saved from the lash of angry coachman January 1889 just before his mental breakdown in Turin a strike forming cab-horse with a theatrical gesture.

The film premiered on 15 February 2011 in the competition of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. The theatrical release in Germany took place on 15 March 2012 in the base movie rentals.

Reviews

" An equally strenuous as a fascinating cinematic tour de force that is challenging in its breathtakingly harsh poetry full of symbols and metaphors. "

" Like no other director Béla Tarr leaves the narrative sensually tangible. The monotony of the images, the repetition of the acts and the slowly spreading resignation develop a suction force, which one can hardly resist. "

" The archaic story of father and daughter, the romantic forces of nature, the pathetic music of composer Mihály Vig Tarr's trunk, which is reminiscent of Baroque painting pictures and the Nietzsche quote at the beginning of the film, all the acts incredibly monumental and pregnant with meaning. But ultimately dedicated to the film only a hermetically sealed, meaningless art world, which refers to nothing other than their own sublime beauty. "
