The War Within is the fourth studio album by the American metal band Shadows Fall. It was released on 20 September 2004 by Century Media.
Formation
After the release of the previous album The Art of Balance Shadows were the case for over a year on tour. After the concert tours, the band was put under time pressure. Both the management and the record company Century Media were quick to publish a successor. This pressure exerted inspired singer Brian Fair to the song "Inspiration on Demand". In a period of half a year, the band wrote ten songs, which were all used for the album.
The War Within was recorded in the studio Planet Z in Hadley. Produced and mixed the album was of " Zeus " ( bourgeois Chris Harris). Drummer Jason Bittner needed for the recordings of his parts only seven hours. Mastering done by Alan Douches. Music videos were shot for the songs "The Power of I and I" and " What Drives the Weak ".

Uwe " Buffo " Schnädelbach wrote in his review that with Shadows Fall The War Within the "missing link between thrash and metalcore have become its own niche " and gave the album 8.5 out of ten. Christof glue from Metal Hammer " crashes the disc as hell." He praised the guitar work and certified Jon Donnais some " fabulous solos " plays. Glue awarded the album six out of seven points. Critical showed the online magazine In Your Face, whose reviewer Ralf criticized the fact that the songs on the length of the album slip past quickly, without having been perceived as a sledgehammer. The album received six out of ten.
The War Within reached number 20 of the U.S. album charts. Overall, the album in the United States sold more than 300,000 copies. In the book Best of Rock & Metal of the German Rock Hard magazine, in the opinion of the Rock-Hard - editing 500 most metal and hard rock albums of all time lists, The War Within was ranked 370
