Theo Eble

Theo Eble ( born June 1, 1899 in Basel, Switzerland, † May 2, 1974 in Basel) was a Swiss painter and graphic artist. He is one of the most important representatives of the realistic - objective painting in the 1920s and the abstract painting after the Second World War.

Life and work

Theo Eble received his education from 1916 to 1920 at the general trade school in Basel and from 1922 to 1925 as a master student of Professor Karl Hofer at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In 1925, Eble marry the Berlin painter Julia Ris ( born September 21, 1904 in Kingston upon Hull (England), † 16 December 1991 in Basel). They then moved to Basel. 1926 took Eble extensive study trips to Italy and France and held in 1930 for almost a year in Ticino to paint on.

From 1931 to 1967 Theo Eble was a teacher of drawing at the general trade school in Basel. In 1933, Eble was co-founder of the Swiss artist group "Group 33 ".

From the year 1934 he began with the abstract painting. He had his first solo exhibition in 1939 (along with Paul Camenisch ) in the gallery Marguerite Schulthess in Basel. 1935 his daughter Doris was born. He married in 1949 a second time, this time Helli Merkle. In the years 1953 and 1954 he had the first exhibitions of his abstract works in Basel, Zurich, Chur and Glarus. 1956 to 1957 he built his studio building on the Bruderholzstrasse in Basel. His art got international attention and recognition: Theo Eble had exhibitions in France and the USA, in 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale in 1959 and the documenta 2 in Kassel. In the years 1961-1963 Eble took longer study trips to Greece.

In addition to its picturesque and graphic work Eble has also created (from 1961) numerous murals in and on public buildings. His work was characterized by the realistic - objective painting in the 1920s. The themes of his early work were landscape paintings and pictures of cities and their lives.
