Theodor Becker

Theodor Becker (* June 23, 1840 in Wahlstorf (Holstein ); † June 30, 1928 in Legnica ) was a German civil engineer and entomologist.

Life

Theodor Becker was born the son of a tenant farm in Wahlstorf. He attended high school in Plon, and then studied at the Technical University of Hanover and at the ETH Zurich engineering. In Hanover, he became in 1860 a member of the country team Slesvico - Holsatia, later Corps Slesvico - Holsatia. In 1868, he settled first settled in Kiel as an independent architect. At the Franco-German War he took part as a volunteer of St. John.

In 1874 he accepted the position of Legnica to their city building and moved there. His buildings, which were considered by his contemporaries as a permanent monuments, included, among others, the old waterworks and the Reichsbank. After two terms as a city planner, he sat down with 47 years as a construction officer, Mr calm and devoted himself to his scientific studies in the study of Diptera.

His first publication appeared in 1887 after a stay in St. Moritz. To investigate the Diptera, he led several extended research trips through that took him to Dalmatia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Corsica ( 1907), in the Basses- Alpes and the Dauphiné (1908), in the Urals (1909 ), after Jemtland and Lapland (1910 ), the Pyrenees (1911) and by Southern Hungary (1912).

Sighted Between 1894 and 1900, and he described several Dipterenfamilien, namely the genus Chilosia that Scatomyziden Sapromyziden, Lonchaeiden, Ephydriden and Pipunculiden. In a series of works he described all over the globe, the family of Chloropiden (1910-1912) and the family of Dolichopodidae ( 1917-1919 ). His last publication, he wrote in 1926 at the age of 86 years.
