Theodor Hagen (music critic)

Theodor Hagen ( born April 15, 1823 in Hamburg, † December 21, 1871 in New York), pseudonym Joachim Fels, is a German composer, music critic, tutor, poet and member of the League of Communists.

Life

Theodor Hagen made ​​from 1838 to 1840 in Hamburg a commercial apprenticeship. After that, he began studying music, which he continued in Paris 1841. He became acquainted with Heinrich Heine, Richard Wagner and Friedrich Hebbel and corresponded from 1842 to 1844 with Ludmilla Assing. Hagen wrote for, edited by Georg Schirges Telegraph magazines for Germany and the Hamburg seasons. After his return to Hamburg Hagen led the Municipal Theater in Hamburg as " theater - Secretary ". During the Revolution 1848/1849 he worked in Hamburg Workers' Educational Association and the Democratic county committee of his hometown. He participated in the Second Congress of Democrats in Berlin ( 26 October to 30 October 1848) and the beginning of May 1849 in Frankfurt. On December 14, 1848 Hagen was elected to the Constituent Assembly in Hamburg. When Karl Marx visited in the spring of 1849 Hamburg, he met Theodor Hagen know. The member of the League of Communists of Conrad Schramm traveled in 1849 with his passport when he was arrested. Beginning of November 1849 negotiated Theodor Hagen on behalf of Karl Marx with the Hamburg publisher Julius Schuberth about the publication of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung. Hagen was the proofreader of this journal. 1850 Hagen emigrated to London, where he earned as a music teacher and journalist of his maintenance. In 1854 he emigrated to the USA and settled in New York. Here he worked as a music teacher and music critic. He wrote about German composer, and also composed some songs. As editor of The Musical review and musical world he found great recognition. Theodor Hagen died on December 27, 1871 of a heart ailment.
