Theodor Kittelsen

Theodor Severin Kittelsen (* April 27, 1857 in Kragerø; † January 21, 1914 in Jeløya ) was a Norwegian artist.

He was the one by his depictions of nature and on the other by his illustrations of fairy tales and legends, especially of trolls, known.

Kittelsen learns first painter and watchmaker. Later, his talent is discovered and he takes classes at the art school in Christiania. He was able to continue his studies in Munich by generous financial support. Since 1879, he had to earn his money as a draftsman for German newspapers and magazines themselves. Back in Norway he later discovered nature as a great inspiration. Kittelsen starts here texts to his drawings to compose himself. Kittelsen's style is mid-way between ( Neo - ) Romantic and naive painting. As a national artist he is indeed appreciated in Norway, but has little international attention. So his name is recorded in almost any painting lexicon. 1955, the coat Seng aces in Vienna-Favoriten was named after him.

Trivia

His drawings were used by the popular Norwegian Black Metal bands Burzum and Satyricon as a design tool for two albums and enjoy about this music subculture a high degree of awareness.
