Theodor Seliwanoff

Theodor Seliwanoff, also Selivanov, Russian Фёдор Фёдорович Селиванов, scientific transliteration Fedor Selivanov Fedorovič (*. Oktoberjul 8 / 20 October 1859greg or Oktoberjul 9 / 21 October in 1859greg Gorodischtsche, Penza, .. . † 1938 ) was a Russian chemist.

Life and work

Theodor Seliwanoff was born as a son of the district judge and landowner. He studied from 1880 to 1885 at the St. Petersburg State Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he spent two semesters in Zurich and four semester in Göttingen with Victor Meyer. In 1888 he received his doctorate in Göttingen with a thesis on phytochemical investigations. He then joined in a laboratory of the main chamber of Weights and Measures, where he became assistant to Dmitri Mendeleev. From 1894 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Saint Petersburg. In 1895 he moved to the Agronomic Institute of the National II Mechnikov University in Odessa. His doctorate, he defended in 1896. Thereafter, he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry and Agricultural Science at the new Alexander Institute for Agriculture and Forestry. 1905 to 1921 he was head of the Odessa - Central Laboratory of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Empire. At the same time he was an assistant professor at the University of Novorossiysk. Since 1918 he was a professor at the Higher Agricultural Institute in Odessa.

Services

In 1887, he developed a chemical detection, can be distinguished with the carbohydrates in ketoses or aldoses, called Selivanov sample ( resorcinol - sample).
