Theodor Wertheim

Theodor Wertheim ( born December 25, 1820 Vienna, † July 6, 1864 in Vienna) was an Austrian chemist.

Life

Wertheim studied medicine and went before completing his studies in Berlin to Eilhard Mitscherlich. There he worked on the then still young organic chemistry. 1843 returned Wertheim back to Austria to work with Josef Redtenbacher. There he conducted in 1844 analytical studies of what he called the volatile garlic oil to determine the sulfur-containing compounds contained therein. He succeeded diallyl sulfide ( C6H10S ) isolate and he had a close relationship of the garlic oil with mustard oil after. He was able to isolate the allyl isothiocyanate present in mustard oil ( C4H5NS ) and convert both compounds together.

Despite its well- acclaimed work him appointed professor in Austria was denied due to his Jewish faith, however, he was appointed in 1848 to a korrespondondierenden member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. He was baptized by his father's death and finally got an appointment at the University of Pest. There he was from 1854 - 1860 worked. Finally, he had to leave Hungary, because from 1860 had to be held in Latin all lectures. Then he moved in 1861 to the University of Graz. There he was very keen to improve the quality of laboratory equipment, but this failed because of the low number of students.

Because of its investigations, the allyl group got its name, derived from the Latin name for garlic (Allium sativum ).
