Théodore Reinach

Théodore Reinach ( born July 3, 1860 in Saint- Germain -en- Laye, † October 28th 1928 in the 16th arrondissement of Paris) was a French archaeologist, politician, numismatist, papyrologist and historian.

Life

Théodore Reinach came from a wealthy Jewish banking family. He was a brother of Salomon Reinach and Joseph Reinach. After studying law in Paris, he worked as a lawyer at the local Court of Appeal 1881-1886. In 1890, he embarked on an archaeological journey to Constantinople Opel. From 1888 to 1906 he was editor of the Revue des Études Grecques. From 1906 to 1914 he worked as a deputy. In 1924 he became professor of numismatics at the Collège de France. Like his younger brother Salomon Reinach dealt with encyclopedic work. He also devoted himself to the Greek and National Archaeology, Papyrology, history of religion and Judaism. Likewise, Reinach was the author of grammatical works.

He was from 1902 to 1908 in Beaulieu- sur -Mer on the Cote d' Azur build the villa Kérylos, was in ancient Greek style of the 2nd and 1st century BC architect Emmanuel Pontremoli ( 1865-1956 ). The villa he bequeathed in 1928 bequeathed to the Institut de France, it is open to visitors.

His published work in 1895 on the Pontic King Mithridates VI. is still regarded as a standard work. Reinach was also the editor of a three-volume French translation of the complete works of Flavius ​​Josephus ( 1900-1904 ). He was a knight of the Legion of Honour.
