Theodore Roszak (scholar)

Theodore Roszak (* November 15, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, † July 5, 2011 in Berkeley, California ) was an American historian, university professor and author of several non-fiction books and novels. As a social critic, he coined the term in the 1960s counterculture.

Life

Roszak received his doctorate at Princeton, was a professor of history at California State University at Hayward and last lived in Berkeley, California. His 1969 published book The Making of a Counter Culture (English title: counter-culture ) is a standard work on the protest movement of those years. The spectrum of his other non-fiction books ranging from alternative forms of life about the importance of ecology and environmental movement to a " Ecopsychology " mentioned variety of deep ecology (but see Ecopsychology ), which he conceived as a synthesis of ecology and psychology. He also looked at the relationship of increasing destruction of the planet Earth and the psychological malaise of many people. In his project he intended to identify ways to heal our alienation and build a spirit and soul healthy society and sustainable culture.

In addition to his scientific writings Roszak also wrote novels. His most famous is the 1991 published book Flicker (German title: shadows, highlights ).
