History

Swami Dayananda Saraswati founded in 1875 in Mumbai, India under the name Arya Samaj dam movement for the renewal of Hinduism on the sole basis of the Veda. In the same year, a few months later, was called the Theosophical Society to life in New York by Helena Blavatsky, Henry Steel Olcott and others. Their initial goal was the scientific study of occultism.

In 1870, Olcott had made the acquaintance of the Indian Moolji Thakurshi ( Moolji Thackersey ), but then lost sight of. 1877 Olcott was accidentally heard of Thakurshis address and then wrote this a letter in which he, along with their goals also represented the Theosophical Society, which he was president. Thakurshis answer again mentioned the Arya Samaj, described the project, pointing to the address the President in Mumbai Hari Chand Chintamani ( Hurrychund Chintamon ). In the subsequent correspondence between Olcott and Chintamani each explained the position of the own organization, which eventually brought the impression of numerous similarities between the teachings of the Arya Samaj and the Theosophical Society as a result. Chintamani was then a member of the Theosophical Society, Olcott and began a correspondence with Dayananda Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj, of the Blavatsky also claimed that his soul is that of a Master of Wisdom. In several letters Olcott Dayananda asked for enlightenment and advice, and this was the request with some extensive teaching writing by, in which he set out his rules of faith and worldview. Finally, the proposal to unite the two companies came up to track together under the leadership Dayananda declared as consistent goals. Their main thing should be the fight against false beliefs and the search for and worship of a formless God.

At a meeting of the Theosophical Society on May 22, 1878 in New York, the merger proposal was approved. With this decision, the subordination of the Theosophical Society under the Arya Samaj was connected at the same time recognized the Theosophical Society Dayananda as their new leader and changed its name to the Theosophical Society of the Arya Samaj of Aryavarta, usually abbreviated to Theosophical Society of the Arya Samaj (TS of AS). The first, and only, a branch of the TS of AS was founded on 27 June 1878 by Charles Carleton Massey in London and was called British Theosophical Society of the Arya Samaj of Aryavart.

Blavatsky and Olcott embarked on 17 December 1878 by New York to India, where they arrived in Bombay on 16 February, 1879. The following evening a large reception with 300 guests for she found in the house Chintamon Hurrychunds, the President of the Arya Samaj, in which the two had their quarters instead. But the next day presented Hurrychund his American guests a bill for all his expenses. Since he had embezzled him TG- sided donations received, we ended the collaboration. The two then left the Theosophists provided by Chintamani available accommodation and respect for the next two years in a different building in Mumbai Girgaum Back Road.

De facto existed the TS of AS only on paper, so the led, founded during this period lodges of the Theosophists in India and Sri Lanka also add " Arya Samaj " not in their name. As Olcott and Blavatsky on May 25, 1880 went over to Buddhism, the separation was carried out religiously.

The official rupture took place only on 26 March 1882, when Dayananda recited a public prosecution under the title humbuggery of the Theosophists, this then also published as a pamphlet and it raised a number of serious allegations against the Theosophists. He described them as " crooks " and " swindler ". Olcott replied in the journal The Theosophist in July 1882, Swami Dayanand 's Charges to the article, in which he tried to refute the accusations and in turn Dayananda loaded.

Blavatsky and Olcott had to see a miraculous superman expected, but found at Dayananda nothing like that. Dayananda turn had companions of his theological beliefs expected, but found in the theosophists atheists. The break with the Arya Samaj led to the reformulation of the objectives of the Theosophical Society, which was easily acceptable by people from different countries and cultures alike, which facilitated the international spread of Theosophy.
