Theraphosa

Theraphosa stirmi

The tarantulas genus Theraphosa counts within the order of bird arachnids ( Mygalomorphae ) to the family of actual tarantulas.

Description

The genus Theraphosa include the largest spiders in the world, such as the Goliath Tarantula ( Theraphosa blondi ). Most Theraphosa species typically reach a body length of 4-8 cm, some, such as T. blondi be about 9 inches tall. The leg span is based on body length between 15 and 25 cm. There are ground dwellers that live in self-dug tubes, abandoned rodent burrows or hollow roots.

Toxicity

The bite is indeed painful, because the species have about 2.5 cm long Beißklauen, but completely harmless to healthy adult humans, since the poison is weak and the animals their usual prey can effectively kill because of their power alone. Could be in some components of the venom is peptides that affect the function of the Kaliumkänale as in the species Theraphosa blondi by coupling the detected with HPLC mass spectrometry

Dissemination

Theraphosa species are mostly native to the rain forests of South and Central America. Currently there is an export ban from French Guiana for species of this genus, which makes the prices for captive-bred rise significantly.

System

Following the recent redescription the genus includes the following three ways:

  • Theraphosa apophysis ( Tinter, 1991)
  • Theraphosa blondi ( Latreille, 1804)
  • Theraphosa stirmi Rudloff & Weinmann 2010
