They Came to Baghdad

They came to Baghdad (AKA They Came to Baghdad ) is the 41th novel by Agatha Christie. He first appeared in the UK on 5 March 1951 at the Collins Crime Club and later in the same year in the U.S. at Dodd, Mead and Company. The German edition was by Scherz Verlag (Bern) launched in 1953 with the translation of Hedwig of Wurzian used to date.

The novel was inspired by Christie's own travels to Baghdad with her second husband, the archaeologist Max Mallowan and is one of the few the author of a spy novel is more than a classic detective novel. Other examples of this genre in the works of the author are a dangerous opponent, the man in the brown suit and Passenger to Frankfurt.

Action

A secret summit meeting of the leaders of the superpowers to be held in Baghdad. But the plans have been betrayed and so wants a fascist underground organization to sabotage the meeting. Things get complicated when the young enthusiastic tourist Victoria Jones finds the dying British agent Henry " Fakir " Carmichael at their hotel. His last words are: " Lucifer - Basra - Lefarge ... "

Victoria begins with our own investigations. She discovers that Lucifer refers to her alleged lover, Edward, who is behind the conspiracy, and Basra said the city of Basra. In Lefarge turns out that she has understood the name wrong and Madame Defarge is meant a character from Charles Dickens ' novel A Tale of Two Cities (A Tale of Two Cities ), the camouflaged messages had knitted. The scarf also Camouflaged Carmichael gives an indication of where important documents are hidden. The documents are found in a sheikh in Kerbala and may be presented at the Summit.

Victoria goes with Richard back to the excavations and the two become a couple.
