Thiepan, also called Hexamethylensulfid is the simplest sulfur-containing seven-membered saturated heterocycle.
Representation
Displaying Thiepan can be effected by the reaction of 1,6- dibromohexane with sodium sulfide or potassium sulfide with 1,6- diiodohexane.
Properties
Thiepan boils at 173-174 ° C and has a density of 0.99 g/cm3.
Reactions
The possible reactions are largely limited to reactions on the sulfur atom and the α - position to the carbon adjacent to the sulfur. So Thiepan can be oxidized with potassium permanganate to sulfones or sulfoxides with hydrogen peroxide.
An α -carbon leaving groups can also be introduced. Thus, reaction with N-chlorosuccinimide - 2 Chlorthiepan. This allows further reactions with nucleophiles. To this end, Grignard reagents can be used for example for the introduction of organic residues.
