Thieves of the Night ( Original Title: Les Voleurs ) is a French film by André Téchiné drama with Catherine Deneuve and Daniel Auteuil in the year 1996.

Action

The little boy Justin learns about the mysterious death of his father Ivan. This was involved in criminal activity. The sister of his accomplices Jimmy Fontana and also his former lover, a young girl named Juliette, then ends up in the police station of Lyon because she stole perfume. There she meets the policeman Alex know who turns out to be a brother of Ivan.

Alex had once chosen as a protest against his criminal family in the occupation of order keeper, but is now disillusioned by his sober police. Frustrated, he begins with Juliette a relationship. This in turn also maintains an intimate relationship with the sensitive philosophy professor Marie Leblanc, who yearns very much love and attention. Both Alex and Juliette and Marie are of life more or less tired and have to admit similar difficulties human closeness.

As Juliette disappears without a trace, Alex turns to Marie. As it turns out, Juliette honor had become, as Ivan was killed in a car theft by a security guard. When Marie learns that Juliette has begun a new life in Marseille without them, Marie rushes frantically from the window. Alex tries, however, establish a relationship with his nephew Justin. However, it is Jimmy who is able to penetrate to Justin and keep him away from the criminal activity of his relatives, although he himself has become the head of the gang. In addition, Jimmy and Justin's mother Mireille come closer, so Justin even more so in Jimmy recognizes a surrogate father. Alex, however, remains lonely.

Background

Thieves of the night was staged by director André Téchiné in the style of film noir. Filmed in Lyon film consists of a prologue, five chapters and an epilogue that plays on multiple levels of time and tells the story from the different perspectives of the main characters. The world premiere took place in May 1996 at the 49th Cannes Film Festival, where the film drama ran as a contest entry. On August 21, 1996 thieves went at night in France in the general rental. In Germany the film was released in theaters on April 24, 1997.

Awards

In 1996, thieves of the night in the competition for the Palme d'Or at the 49th Cannes Film Festival in part, but had to film drama Secrets and Lies ( Secrets & Lies) by British director Mike Leigh beaten. When Cesar Awards the following year, the film of Téchiné was nominated in five categories for the French film award, including Best in the categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress ( Catherine Deneuve ), Best Young Actor ( Benoît Magimel ) and Best Young Actress ( Laurence Cote ). Only in the last category, the film was able to beat the competition. Benoît Magimel received in 1997 for his performance the Prix Michel Simon as Best Actor. The jury of the German Film and Media Review gave the film the title " particularly valuable ".
