Thomas J. Goreau

Thomas J. "Tom" Goreau (* unknown in Jamaica ) is a biochemist and marine biologist. He is the son of Thomas F. Goreau and Nora I. Goreau. After studying in Jamaica, he worked as a doctor for planetary physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in planetary astronomy at the California Institute of Technology and in biochemistry at Harvard University. With his parents, he explored the coral reefs of Jamaica. Even today, this work does not let him go. He researched the effects of global climate change, marine pollution and emerging diseases in the reefs of the Caribbean and the world's oceans. His current work focuses on the recovery of sick or dead coral reefs. Yet his particular attention to the biodiversity of the coral reef in its function as a breeding ground for sea creatures. He continues to work on coastal protection by artificial coral reefs. He was one of the leading scientists in the United Nations Centre for Science and Technology for Development. He was a close friend of the late Wolf Hilbertz, with whom he has collaborated on the development of Biorock technology. He is currently President of the Global Coral Reef Alliance.
