Thomas Jordan (economist)

Thomas Jacob Ulrich Jordan ( born January 28, 1963 in Biel ) is a Swiss economist and since 2012 President of the Board of the Swiss National Bank.

Life

Jordan grew up in Beaumontquartier Biel and attended high school Alpine Road. He studied economics at the University of Bern. In 1993 he earned his doctorate at Ernst Baltensperger with a thesis on the European Monetary Union. In the work, he warned of the sovereign debt and bank failures.

This was followed by a three-year postdoctoral research position at the Department of Economics at Harvard University in the United States, where he wrote his habilitation thesis. This earned him his appointment in 1998 as Assistant Professor and in 2003 an honorary professor at the University of Bern.

Jordan's entry into the Swiss National Bank was in 1997 as a scientific advisor. Two years later he was appointed Deputy Director of Economic Studies unit. In 2002 he became head of the organizational unit research. After he was promoted to director in early 2004, the Federal Council appointed him to the middle of 2004 as Deputy Member of the Executive and Deputy to the Head of the III. Departments in Zurich. In this role, Jordan headed the financial markets, covering the areas of money market operations, foreign exchange and gold operations, asset management, risk management, and financial market analysis.

As of early May 2007 Jordan was by the Federal Council as a member of the Board and Head of III. Department appointed. In April 2009, Jordan was elected Vice President of the Executive Board by the Federal Council on the beginning of 2010. He also took over the management of Department II in Bern, which includes the areas of money, finance, financial systems and security. After the resignation of Philipp Hildebrand Jordan took over 9 January 2012 interim, the Office of the President of the Swiss National Bank. On 18 April 2012, he was appointed by the Federal Council as the new President of the Board of the National Bank. He takes over the management of Department I in Zurich and is responsible for the task of economics, international monetary cooperation, law and services, as well as support functions.

Jordan lectured since 1998 at the University of Bern, where he teaches monetary theory and policy. Between 2002 and 2007 he also taught at the University of Zurich. Since November 2008, Jordan is also Board Chairman of the SNB stabilization fund for the recovery of illiquid UBS assets.

Jordan has since November 2009 Vice- President of the Commission of Experts appointed by the Federal Council on the subject of "Too Big to Fail".

He is married to a polytechnic lecturer and father of two sons. He lives in Küsnacht ( ZH).
