Thomas Metcalfe, 4th Baronet

Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, 4th Baronet (* 1795, † 1853) was one of the personalities of the British East India Company, which ensured the exercise of sovereignty in India. He came to Delhi in 1813 and remained there until the end of his life. From 1835, he held the role of " resident " in Delhi.

One of the objectives was pursued by him to ensure that after the death of Bahadur Shah II should go out the role of the rule moguls (so-called Doctrine of Lapse ). Bahadur Shah, however, tried to impose his favorite son Mirza Jawan Bakht as heir to the throne. The death of Metcalfe in 1853, is sometimes attributed to a poisoning on behalf of Zinat Mahal, mother of Mirza Jawan Bakht.

Thomas Metcalfe's son, Theophilus Metcalfe, was also stationed in the 1850s, in India. He did service in Delhi, which met with disapproval from his father. He survived the Indian rebellion of 1857, but was responsible for the massacre of Indian civilians after Delhi had been retaken by British forces. He was sent back to England in 1858.
