Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence

Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence ( born September 29, 1388 Kenilworth Castle, † March 22, 1421 at Baugé in Anjou ) was a prince of the English royal house.

Thomas was the second surviving son of King Henry IV of England and his wife Mary de Bohun. He had been in 1399 Lord High Steward, 1401-1413 Governor of Ireland, and from 1405 to 1406 Lord High Admiral.

End of 1411 married Margaret Thomas ( 1381/85-1439 ), the youngest daughter of Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent ( Holland House ) and widow of John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset. A year later, on July 9, 1412 he was raised to the Duke of Clarence and Earl of Aumale. From 1419 he was Baron of Elbeuf.

Thomas accompanied his brother Henry V in 1415 during his campaign in France, the troops commanded at the siege of Rouen in 1418, and fell at the Battle of Baugé on March 22, 1421 in the fight with John de la Croise. Thomas, who left no legitimate offspring, was buried in the Cathedral of Canterbury.
