Thomas Seir Cummings

Thomas Seir Cummings (* 1804 in England; † November 25, 1894 in New York ) was an American painter of miniatures.

Life

The already emigrated as a child to North America Thomas Seir Cummings was in 1826 among the founders of the National Academy of the Arts of Design in New York, whose board he served as vice president and treasurer from 1850 to 1853. Later he also wrote the history of the Academy. With the wider use of photography, the force exerted by him art direction of miniature painting was increasingly displaced, previously Cummings was one of the most popular artists of this genre. In the 1850s, the later genre painter John George Brown was one of his students.
