Thomas Sutton

Thomas Sutton (* 1532 in Knaith, † December 12, 1611 in Homerton ) was an English merchant and civil servant.

As Master of the Ordnance, he was responsible for a long time for the fortifications and the military supplies in northern England. In 1578 he leased the manors of Wickham and Gateshead near Newcastle -upon- Tyne. On the lands of the two manors coal mines were operated, which in 1583 laid the foundation for Suttons assets together with the sale of the leases.

Sutton bought in May 1611, known as Howard House London Charterhouse of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, which was on the site of a former Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square in Smithfield on the outskirts of London. As Sutton died in December 1611, he was considered one of the richest men in England, and in his will that his house on Charterhouse Square to The Hospital of King James and Thomas Sutton in Charterhouse should be. The Charterhouse then briefly mentioned means 80 should have accidentally fallen in need soldiers or merchants and servants of the royal court offer accommodation and operate a school for 40 boys at the same time. Known as the Charterhouse School Public School left the place of their founding in 1872.
