Thomas Weld (cardinal)

Thomas Weld ( born January 22, 1773 in London, † April 10, 1837 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

From a Jesuit priest taught as a tutor, Weld attended the Jesuit college in Liege for one year. During the French Revolution looking after emigrated priest, he took particular religious communities in his houses. Since June 7th 1796 married to Lucy Bridget Clifford, he was the father of a daughter. His wife already died on 1 June 1815 and Weld followed the advice of his priest companion and began in 1818 to study theology. Consecrated on April 3, 1821 in Paris as a priest, he was then curate of the mission in Chelsea and then in Hammersmith.

On May 23, 1826, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Amiclea and coadjutor of the Bishop of Kingston in Canada. Even if he had to Hertfordshire received episcopal ordination on 6 August 1826 at Saint Edmunds College, he traveled but for various reasons, including the serious illness of his daughter, not his future diocese from. Finally, he went to Rome, where he abandoned on March 13, 1830 on his position as Coadjutor Bishop. Here Pope Pius VIII created him on March 15, 1830 Cardinal priest and gave him on July 5, 1830, the titular church of San Marcello. He lived in the Palazzo Odescalchi.

1833-1836 worked later Cardinal Antonino De Luca ( 1805-1883 ) as his private secretary.
