Thomastown

Thomastown ( Irish: Baile Mhic Andain ) is a town in County Kilkenny in the South East of Ireland.

General

Thomastown was founded in the 13th century on the River Nore and is 1837 inhabitants according to Census 2006, the second largest town in County Kilkenny. Until the early 1960s, the main source of income was the mill industry.

The town is located 17 km south of Kilkenny Town on the National Road N9 Dublin to Waterford and to the inter-city Dublin- Kilkenny - Waterford Iarnród Éireann connected.

Attractions

1.5 km southwest of the city is located to the Jerpoint Abbey which was founded in the 12th century former Cistercian monastery. Also near Thomastown, at a church ruin in Kilfane, finds himself with the Cantwell Fada a well-preserved medieval high relief.
