Thonac

Thonac is a commune in the Dordogne department in the region of Aquitaine. Thonac is located in Périgord. It belongs to the community association Vallée de la Vézère. The 256 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) are called Thonacois.

Geography

Thonac located on the banks of the Vézère 17 km north-west of Sarlat- la -Caneda and 6 kilometers southwest of Montignac on the D706 road department.

History

In the hamlets belonging to Thonac Losse and Maillot findings were discovered from the Old or New Stone Age excavations that prove that the area was inhabited at that time. It was found among other prehistoric bronze axes that are classified since 1943 as a monument historique (historic monument).

Culture and sights

Museums

The Museum Le Thot - Espace Cro- Magnon of information, including the construction of Lascaux II Lascaux II is a replica of the real cave of Lascaux. Attached to the museum is a zoo, are shown in the horse, Tarpan, bison and other animals that were depicted in the cave paintings of the Paleolithic.

Structures

The Belcayre castle was built in the 15th century and rebuilt in the 16th and 19th centuries.

The Losse castle dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is directly on the Vézère. Castle and gardens have been classified as a monument historique in 2007. In addition, the land as a site Inscrit ( natural and cultural monument) is a listed building.

The Leaning Tower la Vermondie (Tour de la penchée Vermondie ) comes from Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486 AD). He was entered in the 1941 supplementary list of ' Monuments historiques and is now in private ownership.
