Thong Sala

Thong Sala ( Thai: ท้อง ศาลา ) is the capital of the Thai island of Phangan. With approximately 5000 inhabitants, it is the largest town about 60 km north-east of the mainland situated in the Gulf of Thailand island.

General

About half of the population Phangan, including a small Chinese community, lives in Thong Sala. The town in the southwest of the island is the economic and administrative center and three piers of the most important port. Here is the only pier for ferries from the mainland ( Chumphon, Surat Thani ) and from the northern neighboring islands Tao, as well as docks for ferries from the larger southern neighbor island of Samui.

Of economic importance of the place as a major trading center for goods of all kinds, as well as arrival and departure point for many tourists that from here Songthaews ( shared taxis ) or small ferryboats is further to travel to the different places and beaches of the island.

In Thong Sala there are a number of travel agencies, banks, a Muay Thai arena, numerous restaurants and bars and some hotels.
