Thoros of Edessa

Thoros or Theodoros († March 9, 1098 ) was the ruler of Edessa at the time of the First Crusade.

He was first a deputy of Philaretos Brachamios, vernichetete the Seljuk garrison of Edessa and makes himself ruler but was not very popular as a Greek Orthodox Christian with his Armenian Orthodox subjects. Emperor Alexios I Komnenos confirmed him in office and appointed Thoros to Kuropalates.

He resisted attacks by the Seljuks, but had in 1098 take the help of the Crusaders to complete, who were engaged in the siege of Antioch. Baldwin of Boulogne preferring to come to Edessa, rather than to participate in the siege, probably because he hoped to gain a territory for themselves. He was able to be adopted by Thoros as son and used as heirs. A short time later, on March 9, 1098, Thoros was assassinated, said Baldwin's participation in this act is likely. Baldwin was then the first Count of Edessa.
