Thorvald Lammers

Thorvald Amund Lammers ( born January 15, 1841 in Modum; † February 8, 1922 in Aker in Oslo) was a Norwegian composer, opera singer (baritone ) and conductor.

Thorvald Lammers is considered the greatest Norwegian singer in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was married to singer Mally Lammers.

At the age of ten years dominated Lammers instruments Violin, Viola and Piano. Later he also took singing lessons. In 1870 he studied with Fritz Ahrlberg in Stockholm and 1871 with Francisco Lamperti in Milan. In 1871 Lammers his debut as Oroveso in the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini in the Christiania Theater in Oslo. From 1874 to 1877 he worked there, but as a theater was destroyed by fire, Lammers had to look for another engagement. Lammers went abroad, where he studied voice and choral music.

After his stay abroad, he founded his own choir, the later Cæciliaforeningen, he served as conductor of thirty years. Lammers composed several songs and choral works. He also plays an important role in the Norwegian Volksmusik.Inspiriert of a lecture by Ingebret Moltke Moe, he started in the 1890s on a tour that took him across large parts of Norway. On this tour, he sang ballads of Magnus Brostrup Landstad Folkeviser Norske (Norwegian folk songs ). He was also editor of two small booklets with Norwegian folk music. Tekst og toner (1901 and 1902 ) which were repeatedly placed. Lammers was also editor of the book " Store Musikere » ( Great musicians ) ( Aschehoug & Co., 1912). The contents of the book begins with Johann Sebastian Bach, whom he greatly admired, and ends with Robert Schumann. From 1899 related Thorvald Lammers Amund an art scholarship. On February 8, 1922 Lammers died in Aker and was buried in the Vår Frelsers Gravlund in Oslo.
