Moltke Moe

Moltke Moe, Ingebret Moltke Moe ( born June 19, 1859 in Krødsherad; † 15 December 1913 in Kristiania ) was a Norwegian folklorist.

His parents were the Bishop Jørgen Moe (1813-1882) and his wife Johanne Sophie Fredrikke Sørenssen ( 1833-1913 ). He remained unmarried.

Moe grew up in Krødsherad, Drammen and Vestre Aker on at Christiania. As a young student he was a member of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and took over after his death in 1885, the publication of his collection of fairy tales and fairy tales and legends his father's collection. After he had passed his examination in 1876 filed of Arts, he began the study of theology, where he dealt particularly with comparative religion. But soon he was interested only for tradition and history of religion and theology were on. The only exam that he took was the exam philosophicum. He received a scholarship to the University immediately for a long research trip to Telemark, where he was to collect the old folk tales. With a grant from the Storting, he undertook from 1882 to 1886 and from 1889 to 1891, two further expeditions with rich yield. In 1886 he became professor of the Norwegian vernacular with lecture compulsory for Norwegian traditions. He was not a linguist. So when in 1899 a separate department was set up for Landsmål, his chair was renamed " folk traditions, medieval literature, including the Old Norse - Icelandic ". 1889 to 1900 he served on the board of the publishing house " Det Norske Samlaget " and in the editorial department of Syn og Segn.

Great expectations were linked to his scientific work. But he wrote relatively few works. With the increase of his knowledge his self-criticism and the desire grew to illuminate a research subject from as many angles. In addition, he was sickly and involved in many projects, such as " Det norske Samlaget ", the Writers' Union, which he built with, " Norwegian Folk Museum ", " Rolfsen lesebok " and the magazine Norvegia. He lacked any scientific ambition, so that Arne Garborg proposed to establish an "Association for the Protection Moltke Moes ". His works were often already outdated at the appearance. In the fairy tale research he pursued the relationship with mythology, and later the cultural transfer and the trails of the motifs. Here he published a short but important article on Hellenic and Norwegian folk traditions, the migration of fairy tales and comments on individual tales. The introductions to Qvigstads and Sandberg's Sami tales brought him international recognition.

In the folk song research, he dealt with fundamental questions about the origin and history of the Norwegian ballad. But in 1912 he published a short summary of his theories in an introduction to the school edition fra Norske folkeviser middel alderen which he co-authored with his student Knut Liestol. His great dream of a scholarly edition of the Norwegian ballads was never realized. With the help of Sophus Bugge, he succeeded in publishing the Thor - ways ( Torsvisa ) with full scientific apparatus. His school issue and the popular edition of Norwegian folk songs influenced decades the view of this literary genre. On behalf of Asbjørnsen he continued the Norwegianization of fairy tales and legends texts and made them popular. He also participated in the debate on the spelling and drove the Norwegianization of Riksmål in the spelling reform of 1907 ahead. His vision was that Landsmål and Riksmål would merge into a Gesamtnorwegisch.

His large collection of manuscripts was " folke minne Amling Norsk " along with his father and the collection of Asbjørnsen the basis of ethnographic National Archives.
