Thousand Islands

The Thousand Islands (Eng. "Thousand Islands " ) are at the outflow of Lake Ontario in the border region between Canada and the U.S. at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River. The archipelago consists of 1864 islands, where Wolfe Iceland is by far the largest and the smallest island No. 15. 21 of these islands form the Thousand Islands National Park, the smallest national park in Canada. Since 2002, the area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The American salad dressing " Thousand - Iceland - dressing " takes its name from the region in which it was probably invented and has borne the name of the Thousand Islands, which are otherwise little known outside North America in the world.

Were found remains of the Adena culture at the Thousand Islands site.

The numerous forts and other military installations in the region are witnesses of the many conflicts in the European colonization of the North American continent, such as the Seven Years War. As a result, there are more than 400 shipwrecks alone in close proximity to Kingston in the depths of Lake Ontario.

The biggest tourist attraction is Boldt Castle on Heart Iceland, which was built by the coming of Prussia hotel owner George C. Boldt at the beginning of the 20th century in the style of a medieval castle Rhine.
