Threefold repetition

The repetition of position in a chess game is a situation in which a position for the third time appears on the chessboard with the same player on the train and with the same possible moves. At the request of located at the train player's game ends in a draw then.

The repetition of moves is a special case of a repetition of position. If both players each draw a figure and they retire in the next train back to the previous field, right then repeat this pair of trains and still have the same possible moves, then there is a repetition of moves. Because this three times in the same position will be created, it is also a repetition of position. However, a repetition of position can also be caused by a different sequence of moves and this need not necessarily be at intervals of two trains; theoretically, similar characters, including two white towers, their places may have changed.

For example, a perpetual check is usually a repetition of position - often even to a repetition of moves - if the players do not give the game already draw. Sometimes the term repetition of the position is erroneously equated with the term repetition of position.

Precise definition

In the rules of the World Chess Federation FIDE, the repetition of position is defined as:

Positions under a) and b ) are considered equal if the same player on the course is, pieces of the same kind and color occupy the same squares, and the possible moves of all the pieces of both players are the same. Positions are not equal, if a farmer who en passant could be beaten, can not be beaten, or if the right to castle has temporarily or permanently changed. "
