Thurles

Thurles ( Irish: Thurles Thurles or ropes) is a town in County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. It is situated on the River Suir and has 6831 inhabitants ( 2006). Sister cities are New stone in Germany, England and Bollington in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. In the city is located to the Semple Stadium one of the largest stadiums in Ireland. It has a capacity of 55,000 and is mainly used for Gaelic football and hurling. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly is based in Thurles. On the east side of town is the Assumption Cathedral.

History

The Carmelite Monastery, founded by the Butler family in 1300 at the site in 1540 dissolved by James Butler, Earl of Ormond. On November 1, 1884, the hotel was founded in Thurles the Gaelic Athletic Association ( GAA) for the Preservation and Cultivation of National Pastimes in Miss Hayes 's Commercial. Tony Ryan, one of the founders of Ryanair, was born in 1936 in Thurles.
