The Iridescent thyme (Thymus caespititius ) is a species of the genus of wild thyme (Thymus ) in the mint family.

Description

The Iridescent Thyme is a carpet-forming plant with woody smelling shoots, flower-bearing upright stems with a height of 2 to 7 cm, and axillary tufts form of small leaves. The leaves are about 8 mm long and 1.7 mm wide, narrowly spatulate and glabrous at the base, they are ciliated.

The inflorescences are loosely built and consist of zweiblütigen Scheinwirteln. The bracts similar to the leaves. The cup has a length of 3 to 4 mm, the upper teeth are minor and not ciliated, the lower teeth are flat, and as long as wide. The crown reaches a length of 6 to 14 mm, is purplish - pink or whitish.

Within the genus of wild thyme (Thymus ) the species is classified in the section Micantes.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in Portugal, northwest Spain, the Azores.
