Thymus mastichina is a species of the genus of wild thyme (Thymus ) in the mint family.

Description

Thymus mastichina is a 20 to 50 cm tall, erect plant. The leaves are in clusters in the axils of the stems. They are 8-10 mm long and 2-3 mm wide. They are narrowly ovate to elliptic- lanceolate, often notched more or less fine. You are tomentose or nearly glabrous, not ciliate at the base.

The inflorescences are usually nearly spherical, and measure 10 to 20 mm in diameter. The bracts are similar to the foliage leaves and greenish. The calyx is 4-6 mm long, the upper teeth have a length of 2 to 3 mm, all teeth are ciliated long, so that the inflorescence gets a little fiederiges appearance. The crown is whitish, the corolla tube is slightly above the cup out.

Within the genus of wild thyme (Thymus ) the species is classified in the section mastichina.

Occurrence and use

The species is widespread in Spain and Portugal. In Spain and Argentina thymus mastichina is grown and used as a seasoning.
