Tibidabo

The 512 -meter-high Tibidabo is the local mountain of Barcelona. He is the highest peak in the Serra de Collserola extending in the north- west of Barcelona between the rivers Besòs and Llobregat.

Tibidabo is clearly visible in normal weather in the entire city of Barcelona and offers panoramic views of the city. On the Tibidabo are the Catholic Church Sagrat Cor, a well-known amusement park and the striking TV tower Torre de Collserola. Tibidabo can be a road and a funicular railway ( Funicular de Tibidabo ), which lead up to the mountain reaches.

Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor

The Temple Expiatori del Sagrat cor ( Catalan Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart of Jesus ) is a church on the summit of the mountain. It emerged in various stages of construction 1902-1961 on the basis of a draft of the architect Enric Sagnier in the Gothic Revival style inspired by the Basilique du Sacré- Cœur de Montmartre in Paris. It is topped by a bronze statue of Christ that overlooks arms outstretched over the city to the sea. With a lift and stairs two towers of the church can be climbed.

Amusement park

The amusement park ( Parc d' Tibidabo Funfair ) covers an area of seven hectares. It was built by the pharmacist Salvador Andreu and 1901 taken together with the cable car in operation. The park is aimed primarily at families. The amusement park has many older facilities - partly since its inception time - preserved and radiates therefore, roughly comparable with the Vienna Prater, a nostalgic charm. After financial issues, the park was taken over in 2000 by the city of Barcelona.

Torre de Collserola

The 288 -meter high TV tower Torre de Collserola was built for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. It was designed by British architect Norman Foster. On the top floor of the tower top at 135 meters altitude above ground is a publicly accessible viewing platform.

Origin of the name

The name of the mountain comes from a Latin Bible Quote in connection with Jesus' temptation by the devil. According to Matthew 4:8 The devil led Jesus "on a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world ... ". Then (Matthew 4:9 ), he offered to Jesus: " ... haec tibi omnia dabo si Cadens adoraveris me. " ("... All this I will give you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me. ").
