Tiburón Island

The Isla Tiburón, also Isla del Tiburón ( Seri: Tahéjöc ) is, with an area of nearly 1201 km ² the largest island in the Gulf of California and the largest island of Mexico. The island belongs to the state of Sonora and is situated approximately at the level of Hermosillo, Sonora.

In 1957, the island and the then living there Seri Indians were visited by the German Faltbootfahrer - couple Marianne and Herbert Rittlinger. Today Tiburón is uninhabited and since 1963 a nature reserve ( Tiburón in Spanish means shark ).

The former or temporary Seri settlement Tecomate is located in the north of the island near a fresh water spring called Pozo Hardy.
