Geographical location

The Tiburon Peninsula ( French Le Tiburon ) is the largest peninsula of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. Politically, the peninsula is one of Haiti, and contains there full départements Grand Anse, Nippes and Sud and the western areas of the departments of Ouest and Sud -Est.

The eastern part of the peninsula was that of the 2010 Haiti earthquake struck hardest region.

Geography

The Tiburon Peninsula forming the extreme south-west of Hispaniola and extends up to 250 km into the Caribbean Sea; it separates the Gulf of Gonâve from the Caribbean Sea. The peninsula measures about 30 kilometers at its widest point and 60 km at its narrowest point. It has an area of ​​around 9000 km ² and is thus one third of the national territory of Haiti. The highest point is 2347 m, the Pic Macaya in the Massif de la Hotte in the west of the peninsula; largest city is Les Cayes on the south coast with some 60,000 inhabitants (as of 2005).
