The western uninhabited third with a size of 330 hectares belongs to the municipality ( Wijk ) Goudswaard, while the larger eastern part with 692 acres and a total population of 10 inhabitants ( 2008 ) is one of Zuid -Beijerland.

History

The island is the result of a mud flat that was not flooded during normal high water level since the 17th century and was finally dammed in the years 1750-1860 by little. The oldest of the polder polder Maria lies in the east of the island.

Until the 90s of the 20th century, large parts of the island were used for agricultural purposes; it existed in the 70s also considerations here to establish, inter alia, a relief for the city of Rotterdam, a spacious holiday and leisure complex, a cargo airport or a storage facility for contaminated silt.

After May 2007, the last farmer left the island, still remained 11 inhabitants.

Planning

There are three new landscape zones arise:

  • " Melancholy " ( Weemoed ) in the east, a reconstructed polder with historically reconstructed dykes, farmhouses and the cultivation of old cereal plants
  • "Fullness" ( Weelde ) in the middle of the island with a predominantly more natural floodplain without agricultural use and
  • "Wilderness" ( wilderness ) in the south and west with the today almost untouched nature, which largely consists of almost inaccessible reed and Reetflächen.

In the future Tiengemeten should be a destination for a " soft tourism ". So to get an overview of the island, for example, a newly created mound.
