The power plant Tilbury is a coal- coal, oil and biomass fired power plant on the north bank of the Thames at Tilbury in Essex. The system consists of several units that were built at different times, or are under construction.

Power plant units

A Tilbury

The first coal-fired power plant with 360 MW Tilbury A was built in 1951 by the state-owned power, the Central Electricity Generating Board ( CEGB ). It was until 1981 in operation, was then decommissioned and demolished in 1999.

Tilbury B

The second coal power plant with 1,428 MW Tilbury B was also built by the CEGB in 1961 and commissioned in 1968. In 1990 the plant was privatized and came to the energy supplier National Power in a row with stand 2013, the owner RWE npower. The system consists of four power blocks, are normally only three blocks in use, while the fourth block is used as a reserve in order to maintain the power supply during maintenance in the other blocks can.

Tilbury B was extended in 2004 to allow larger coal vessels up to 65,000 tons of coal, the discharge of the cargo.

In May 2011, there were plans to convert Tilbury B in a biomass power plant with a reduced electrical output of 750 MW. The necessary wood chips derived from the RWE own factory pellet plant in Waycross Georgia ( USA) and must be imported. The converted plants which mainly burn biomass, went in February 2012 to the network. For pure coal power plants wood pellets can be added as a supplement of the coal, which is possible up to 10 % easy. Although the performance but the access to substantial subsidies and reduced crediting of carbon dioxide emissions Reduction is return, though.

Just a few days after commissioning the new plant was heavily damaged by a major fire burned in which around 4,000 tonnes of wood pellets ..

In July 2013, the operator announced the closure in October 2013.

Tilbury C

In early 2007 announced the owner RWE npower to trying to replace the power plant unit Tilbury B by a new, blank out at 1,600 MW, " cleaner " coal power plant. It was planned to take Tilbury C in the year 2014.
