Tilly-sur-Seulles

Tilly -sur -Seulles is a French commune, located in the department of Calvados and the region Basse -Normandie. It belongs to the district of Caen and is the administrative center ( chef - lieu) of the Canton of Tilly -sur -Seulles. The place hat1546 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). Mayor ( Maire ) is Olivier Quesnot. The inhabitants call themselves Tillois.

Geography

Tilly -sur -Seulles about 15 km west of Caen is located at an altitude 44-122 m above sea level, the average height is 70 m. The municipality covers 8.89 km ² ( 898 ha), and a population density of 139 inhabitants per km ². Neighboring municipalities are Juvigny -sur -Seulles, Bucéels, Fontenay -le- Pesnel and Hottot -les- Bagues. The city is situated on the banks of Seulles.

The area around Tilly -sur -Seulles contains very clayey soils, so that there are many well-preserved finds from prehistoric times.

History

The first settlement was in the Gallo- Roman period. This was established by finds of stone axes and from this time. The place name could therefore be attributed to Tilliatum or Tillicium. In the municipality there should have been a total of three Roman roads, but no remains of these roads were found, so the exact location is not known.

Tilly -sur -Seulles was very badly damaged in the battle for Caen in July 1944. About 70 % of all houses were destroyed. During the fighting, the place changed a total of 23 times the owner. From the severity of the fighting still bear witness to two British cemeteries with a total of 1,224 graves of fallen soldiers.

Buildings and monuments

Other attractions include a medieval church whose ship dates back to the 11th century. The church was renovated in the 18th century. Next there is the Romanesque chapel of Notre- Dame-du -Val. During the fighting in 1944, the chapel was badly damaged. There, now houses a museum about the fights.

Among the civil buildings include a medieval bridge, which consists of three arches and the remains of a castle from the 18th century.

Tilly -sur -Seulles is being developed by the Department of Roads D 6 and D 13 The D9 runs about one kilometer south of the place over. The nearest railway station is located in Caen.
