Tim Barnett (politician)

Timothy Andrew Barnett (* August 4, 1958 in Rugby, United Kingdom) is a New Zealand politician.

Life

Barnett was born in 1958 in English rugby. After school in England he studied economics at the London School of Economics and graduated in 1981. Barnett involved as LGBT activists in the United Kingdom, particularly in the Stonewall Lobby Group.

In 1991 he moved with his partner to New Zealand. He took part in the New Zealand citizenship and ran for the New Zealand Parliament. He was elected for the District Christchurch Central as a Member of the New Zealand Labour Party in the Parliament elected in 2005 and again in 1996. At the parliamentary elections in 2008 Barnett did not occur again. During his deputies time a law instituting a registered civil partnership was founded in 2004 in New Zealand adopted. Barnett was politically supportive role as an MP at this legislation and continued in 2003 for the legalization of prostitution in New Zealand.

Since 2012 Barnett is the General Secretary of the Labour Party.
