Timahoe

Timahoe (Irish Tigh Mochua, " Mochuas house" ) is a small village with 527 inhabitants ( 2006) in County Laois in Ireland. It is located in a broad valley at the intersection of several roads south of Portlaoise.

The last relic of a at this place of St. Mochna (d. 657 ) founded the monastery is a very late erected, well-preserved about 29.3 m tall round tower from the 13th century. There are three thickening on the base of the tower. Above this the displacement of the periphery of the tower is about 17.5 m, and a diameter of about 5.5 m. The portal-like designed door is 4.9 m above the ground. The high window are pointed arch and are surrounded by large stone slabs. The plates of the window seem to have worn carvings that are verwittet.

The dates of death of monks in the old monastery are 880-1007 and the establishment of a church has been handed down in 1089. The monastery was founded by the O'Mores back in the late Middle Ages. After the Cambro -Norman conquest of Ireland, the monastery and the lands were confiscated. 1609 Richard Cosby got the lands. The last monk of the monastery was killed in 1650. Probably a member of the Cosby family later transformed the medieval church into a Castle. Its eastern wall indicates that a native of the 15th century arch was built.
