Time Sharing Operating System

TSOS (Time Sharing Operating System) was the operating system of the RCA ( Radio Corporation of America ) mainframes of the Spectra 70 Series.

RCA worked until 1971 in the computer business. Then it was sold to Sperry Corporation; Sperry TSOS offered under the name of VS / 9. The mid-seventies was sold under the name BS2000 an evolved version of TSOS also from Siemens.

While Sperry / 9 no longer offered (or Univac after the renaming of the company ) VS since the early eighties, BS2000 - now called BS2000/OSD - continue to be distributed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

TSOS was the first operating system that supported the virtual addressing the main memory. In addition, it was distinguished by the fact that in contrast to IBM's OS/360 - and its successor MVS, OS/390 and z / OS - the user interface for timeshare and batch processing was identical. This facilitated the operation compared to IBM products significantly.
