Timeline of transportation technology

The traffic history explores historical aspects of transport and is thus a bridge discipline between transport sciences and the science of history.

As a discipline, the history of transport was coined in the 19th century, then still a part of the economic or the history of technology. Today, it also includes elements, inter alia, the political history, constitutional, social, local and regional history and the history of science.

Tasks

The traffic history studied, for example:

  • The development of economic and business factors of production ( productive forces ) transport ( transport in the wider sense, routes and equipment, vehicles and energy supply as well as other equipment, labor, knowledge, organization, etc.)
  • The relationship between transport and the respective social structure (mobility and mobility culture, society, corporate structures, etc.)
  • Business and economic aspects of transport in different eras
  • The political and military importance of transport
  • Long-term studies and demand forecasts
  • Technology assessment, technology assessment or traffic system evaluation
  • Knowledge management in the transport sector ( extraction, treatment, preservation of knowledge )

Institutions

By 2001, the discipline in Germany as Chair, Institute or department at the University of Transportation "Friedrich List" Dresden ( 1952-1992 ) and at the Faculty of Transportation Sciences "Friedrich List" of the Technical University of Dresden ( 1992-2001 ) was institutionalized. Currently working in the field of transport history is continued by the Working Group on Transport History in the boys forum DVWG. Other institutions in Germany, the German Society for the company's history, the working group traffic history as well as various transport museums.

Within the French Annales school of traffic history questions were emphasized in the framework of economic and regional historical research.
