Timika

Timika is a city in Papua / New Guinea, Indonesia with about 100,000 inhabitants and the capital of Mimika region.

The city is located in the immediate vicinity of the Lorentz National Park and the largest gold mine in the world, the Grasberg mine. The proximity of the mine and the rapid growth of the city are a threat to the environment and the national park dar. Further, because of the activities of Papuan rebels Organisasi Papua Merdeka in the region, the Indonesian military strong presence.

Timika is the seat of the Diocese of Timika.
